For this month’s Athlete Insights, I had the pleasure of interviewing Ailish Ward from the senior class of ‘23. Ailish has attended Ashley Hall for fourteen years, seven of which she’s been an avid cross-country runner. She first shares her team’s PQV spirit with a fond memory of winning State together during her sophomore year. Though the cross-country team had only just started adjusting to a new coach, they pulled through and ended as champs, demonstrating well what Ashley Hall girls do best: having the will and showing their ability. “None of us expected to win. It was really exciting.”

Ailish explains that much of her motivation as an athlete stems from the combined efforts of individual and team performance that have continued to keep the runners within top placings throughout the years. “Ashley Hall’s strong sense of “team” really helps because otherwise, I’d feel like I was running alone, and I’m grateful that we've always had such a strong group of girls.”

Lastly, Ailish lets us in on a few tips for balancing sports and academics, “I think having a planner really helps just to map out my weeks.” She explains that she likes to know what’s ahead so she can plan around events and remain productive. Her goal is to dedicate homework and studying to the first half of her week while opening time for herself near the end, especially if she has a Saturday meet.

Thanks for the pointers, Ailish!
