Second semester slump. Although it is only the beginning of the second semester, I’m sure everyone is already stressed out and tired from all of the projects, tests, quizzes, and homework. I know that’s how I’ve been feeling recently. Being stuck in a loop of stress and anxiety isn’t fun for anyone, especially when trying to get motivated to do better in the second semester. Fortunately, I’ve learned a few tricks and tips that have helped me stay out of the Second Semester Slump:

  1. GET ORGANIZED - Maybe you have a planner, and maybe you use it consistently. Maybe you don’t have a planner at all and never plan on using one. For me, having a planner or somewhere to write my homework and assignments down is super helpful. As I said. It doesn’t have to be a planner. Lots of people use the Notes app on their phone or computer or the sticky notes feature on Mac. Sometimes a physical notepad or post-it note will do the trick, too!

  2. PLAN AHEAD - It’s always nice to know what upcoming assignments you have in the coming weeks so you’re not left surprised by any major assignments. That way, when those assignments are coming close, you’ll know what to study for and how to prepare yourself so that you are able to do your best.

  3. HAVE SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO - At the end of each week, plan something fun to do that Friday night or over the weekend. Whether it be hanging out with friends, going out to eat at your favorite restaurant, or even just staying home and watching movies, having something fun to do after a long week is an awesome reward for all of your hard work.

  4. TAKE MENTAL HEALTH DAYS - Lots of people don’t believe in mental health days, or just mental health in general. But taking days off for yourself is SUPER important! You’re not always going to feel your best and you may have a hard time putting your best foot forward. Instead of taking a “Mental Health Day,” every two months you may want to take a “Break Day” that allows you to catch up on any missing assignments or homework that is due soon. And if nothing is due soon, then feel free to use that “Break Day” doing whatever you want.

  5. SELF CARE SUNDAYS - Each sunday, wake up early instead of sleeping in so you can accomplish more. Start off by eating a good breakfast and then moving on to doing your homework. Take breaks in between assignments to eat a snack or watch TV, but don’t take super-long breaks. A 10-15 minute break gives you enough time to reset and then feel motivated to do more work. After all of your work is finished, get some lunch, hang out with friends, or even take a short nap. Take that night to light some candles, put on a facemask, and give yourself the treatment you deserve!

If the Second Semester Slump is beginning to get the best of you, or you just need some breathing space from a busy school day, try out some of these tips and tricks to stay motivated and at the top of your game during this last little stretch of school!
