Hello Panthers! As we come to the end of October, we here at Ashley Hall have had so much fun in such a little time… From pep rallies to little sister/big sister events to the Halloween Carnival coming up we really see the true essence of what makes Ashley Hall so beautiful. Ashley Hall continues to further educate the students about things not only going on inside our community but things happening all around the world.
This year we are focusing on our UN Sustainable development goal for the year, Ending World Hunger/Food Insecurity. Thanks to our “Girls with the Will” ambassadors and faculty we organized a fun engaging little sister/big sister event to kick off the start of the year. During the event big sisters, grades 7-12 picked up their little sisters, grades Kindergarten–6th, and took them around to 3 different stations, each in which they were informed on food insecurity and how they can help stop it in the Lowcountry.
The first station took place in the AH dining commons where little/big sister pairings were educated, by the fifth graders about the amounts of food waste we often waste when eating. There, big sisters assisted their little sisters in writing a response to the prompt, “How can you reduce your food waste?” The pairings moved to the second station, the sports court in front of the IP. Similar to the fifth graders, we were educated by the sixth graders about how we at Ashley Hall can help grow healthy foods. We ended the kickoff event in Davies Auditorium and heard from the founder of the infamous Blessing Box, Katie Dahlheim, on how and why she started the Blessing Box project in 2017. If some of you don’t know, the Blessing Boxes are cabinets full of canned/reusable foods in several places throughout South Carolina. The Blessing Box is for people who may be food insecure to freely pick up food for their needs.
The event concluded with the “Girls with the Will” ambassadors announcing a school-wide food drive for the week of October 9-13th.
