Spiral Walk- A Look At The Past, And A Reminder Of Tomorrow

I always thought that the Spiral Walk was a tradition that’s been going on since the beginning of time. I did not know that Mrs. Hughes created it in 2017, but here we are. It’s an important tradition because it allows the Senior class to look back on their past, and see who they once were so they can let it affect who they will become.
The walk itself is where seniors walk around the campus, walking by every building- seeing every age in this school. It is fascinating to think that the little kids will all be seniors someday. They are all going to look at a new generation of kids, some who have not even been born yet and think that they were once that small.
Seniors used to start at the building they came into the school in whether it be EEC or Jenkins, that is the place this all began for them. Due to Covid-19, they now start at McBee and go from there.
This year the spiral walk was on May 17, along with the Upper School closing ceremony. Just as it has been for the past few years. Graduation is May 26 this year, so this is one of the last times we will see the class of 2024 in the wild.
All of the upper school and Nautilus get to see what they will do in a few years. I see it as a reminder that I don’t have to grow up too fast, I don’t have to let my childhood slip by. It reminds me of some advice someone very wise gave to me last year, “Refuse to age”.
It means that you should hold on to what you have now, don’t let it go by without you. Enjoy classes being as easy as they ever will be for you because they can only get harder. Take a moment to remember that life can either pass you by, or you can take it and live it.
When life gives you lemons, make life, live even on the bad days.
I think this tradition is beautiful because it is a reminder to think about the past, to stop and think about who we have become and who we were, not only for the seniors but for everyone else in Ashley Hall as well.
