Groundhog Day has been a celebrated holiday for 137 years and Punxsutawney Phil has been magnificent through it all! He has been the best weather predictor you could have and keeps us on our toes on whether it will be spring or winter.  Punxsutawney Phil comes out of hibernation on February 2nd and if he sees his shadow we have 6 more weeks of winter and if not spring will be just around the corner! At first, hedgehogs were used to predict seasons but it changed to groundhogs because of where the pilgrims traveled. The forecast is held in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania and many people travel and join together with pilgrim costumes ready for this groundhog action. It's so popular there is a book and a movie. Nevertheless, Phil is the main attraction so some facts about groundhogs are they eat plants, Afafa, clover, peas, and hackberry leaves with their large and long teeth. They grow 1/16 or an inch every week and never stop, digest fibers, live underground, and go into hibernation in this hibernation their heart rate can get to 5 bpm. (the average resting heart rate in a human is about 60-100 depending on age) Groundhogs are also called woodchucks starting the “How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood” tongue twister. Punxatwaney Phil deserves all the credit he can get on Groundhog Day and it wouldn't be possible without him.
