Mattie Hood ‘23, an Ashley Hall swimmer for three of her nine years in the sport, joins us for this month’s Athlete Insights. State winner and runner-up in both of her fields two weekends ago, Mattie proves she’s a driving force. “I’m a pretty competitive person. I just really don’t like to lose.”

While recognizing these personal accomplishments, the team itself is where Mattie has found her passion and determination for the sport. “Ashley Hall’s team pushes everyone to do their best,” she explains. “The fun we have together translates well into the pool.” Ranging from 6th-12th grade, the swim team includes a variety of interests and levels of experience that make the group so close. Mattie tells us that their shared routine of early wake-ups and difficult practices enforces their bond and collaborative nature.

Now that her senior swim season has come to a close, Mattie says she’ll miss racing other schools and getting to see the younger teammates improve, as these moments were such a special part of the many years she has competed. “I love Ashley Hall swimming. I look forward to it each year, so I’m so sad that this was my last season.”

Thanks for your time, Mattie!
